Tuesday, 10th May

To students and teachers. Please see below to find the program of the day. The Agenda book is scheduled for the end of Block 2 due to Kapa Haka 3rd block, and teaming last.

Block 1:

UoI 2: The Water Cycle

One fact about our awesome planet that always amazes me, is that water never disappears.  Every drop of water that is on the earth today was on the earth millions of years ago.

Today we are looking at 'The Water Cycle'.  This is the process by which all water is cycled around from storage and use to evaporating and forming clouds before it comes back to earth again in the for of clouds, snow, sleet or hail. It is an amazing phenomenon and just one of the many facets of how special our planet really is.

Here are videos that will tell you more about the water cycle:

Basic:

Complex:

Here is a diagram that shows it simply:

Your task:

  1. Watch one of the videos.
  2. Copy the water cycle picture into your Sharing the Planet book.
  3. Write an explanation underneath of what the water cycle is, in your own words. (Remember to use AAAWWUBUS words to show linking of ideas)
  4. Using research you do, write about how much water is available to us people. Add information on the effects of pollution and wastage on this. How is the population of the earth making a difference?
  5. How does this relate to the central idea, 'We are the guardians (Kaitiaki) of our planet’s resources'?

Block 2:

TED-Ed - Term 2 Week 2

A guide to the energy of the Earth - Joshua M. Sneideman

Energy is neither created nor destroyed — and yet the global demand for it continues to increase. But where does energy come from, and where does it go? Joshua M. Sneideman examines the many ways in which energy cycles through our planet, from the sun to our food chain to electricity and beyond.

1. Energy is a physical quantity that cannot be ______________or destroyed.

2. Where does most of the US electricity come from (primary source)?

3. Energy choice impacts the quality of an individual and society by ________.

4. What is a source of energy that is integral to the earth systems?

5. Which of the following provides the most energy for our ecosystem?
6. Explain how energy impacts the quality of life for individuals and society.

7. Think about our school and its use of energy. What is our school’s primary and secondary sources of energy?

8. Discuss what the similarities and differences are between the different units of energy (ex. Watt, Joule, Lumen).

9. Brainstorm some of the impacts you think your generation’s energy consumption is having today and on tomorrow’s future generations.

10. What are some examples of energy decisions you make every day?

Sharing the planet - RUBBISH

Class Activity
As a class collect our recyclable rubbish (while at school) for one week. We will need to make sure all materials we collect are clean. This may require materials to be rinsed and dried.

After one week, measure and weigh the accumulated rubbish.
Calculate:
  • If this is the amount of rubbish from one week, what would it equal at the end of one year? After ten years?
Share and reflect
Share what you have learned from the reading and class activity with students outside of our class. You might do this via your e-portfolio/site or through a presentation etc.
  • Why is plastic harmful to the environment?
  • What could people do to produce less trash?
Going further:
  • Other than waste plastic pollution, hows does the generation and use/ consumption of plastics impact on the environment?

Sharing the Planet - UOI 2

Sharing The Planet - LOI1 - The Earth's Resources and their limited nature

The Egg and the Fork Activity - The Earth's Resources

  •  Can you trace these two materials back to their source? Discuss as a group and record your responses in your book. Notes
  •  Can you think of anything that you use that is not provided by the earth.
Raw materials that we take from the earth to make into other things are known as natural resources. Manufactured resources are made from natural resources by undergoing some form of process.
Energy, which is also a natural resource, is needed to change objects from the natural forms into the products we use.

Read the following information sheet and then complete the student worksheet below.

Writing - Sharing the planet

Writer's Workshop - Nature Is Speaking (Finding Out / Sorting Out)

Conservation International believe strongly in the power of visual storytelling to educate, inspire and affect change. CI's filmmakers traverse the globe, spotlighting the people, challenges and successful projects that our programs are pioneering.

Task: You are to craft, re-craft and present your own text (video) as a means of 'Taking Action'

Choose:
- Which force are you going to write about? ocean, trees, bees, etc
- Think about perspective! You are that force of nature! What characteristics does it have?
- Which language features will you choose to use?
- How can you make your text more powerful?
- Does your text suit the purpose? How can you be sure?

An example - Nature Is Speaking – Julia Roberts is Mother Nature

Some call me nature
Others' call me "Mother Nature"
I've been here for over 4.5 billion years
22,500 times longer than you
I don't really need people
But people need me
Yes, your future depends on me
When I thrive, you thrive
When I falter, you falter
Or worse,
But I've been here for eons
I have fed species greater than you
And I have starved species greater than you
My oceans
My soil
My flowing streams
My forests
They all can take you
Or leave you
How you chose to live each day
Whether you regard or disregard me,
Doesn't really matter to me
One way
Or the other
Your actions will determine your fate
Not mine
I am nature
I will go on
I am prepared to evolve
Are you?

End Title: Nature doesn't need people... people need nature

Act:
- Use iMovie to create your very own 'Nature is speaking' video
- Where are you going to source your images and sound? (Make connections here to the #16stubc focus for this week)
- How are you going to ensure that your voice is recorded clearly and no background noise is distracting?
- Share your completed video with Mr Cameron

Reflect:
- Use the following to complete a detailed reflection about your 'Action'

Sharing the Planet

STP LOI 2 - Personal choices impact the environment (Wonderopolis)

Key Questions:
- Do human beings really have an impact on the natural areas they visit?
- How do the choices humans make impact the natural environment?

- What actions can benefit and/or harm the environment?

Have You Ever Wondered...
- Do you leave a trace?
- How do human activities impact the environment?
- What can you do to minimise your impact on the environment?

Task: Click the image below and then read the text - complete the wonder words and then test your knowledge by completing the comprehension task.

Making Connections - Write a statement / bullet point any connections you can make between the main concepts in this task and the CI and LOI's.

Sharing the Planet

STP LOI 2 - Personal choices impact the environment (The Lorax)

1. As you re-watch The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, list the names of the producers and consumers shown in the movie.

2. What was the land of the Lorax like before the Once-ler arrived? Did it seem like someplace you'd like to live? What parts of your own environment would you be sad to see go?

3. What kind of person is the Once-ler? Why won't he listen to the Lorax? The Lorax says to the Once-ler, "You are crazy with greed." Why does the Lorax say that? Do you agree or disagree?

4. Why does the Lorax speak for the trees? Why is it important to speak up for others? Have you ever spoken up for someone else? Has someone else ever spoken up for you?

5. How does the Once-ler's Thneed business hurt the land of the Lorax? What happens to the Swomee-swans, the Brown Bar-ba-loots, and the Humming-fish? How could things have been different if the Once-ler listened to the Lorax?

6. What do you think the boy hearing the story will do with the Truffula seed that the Once-ler tosses to him? What would you do if you were the boy?

7. Do you think the Lorax and his friends will come back if new Truffula Trees grow? Where do you think they have been?

8. The Once-ler says, "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." What does the Once-ler mean? Can one person make a difference? Can you? What are some things you can do to better your own environment?

9. How does the Once-ler feel about what his Thneed business did to the Lorax and friends?

10. Dr. Seuss used bright colors on some pages of the book and dull colors on others. Did you notice this? Why do you think he did that?

11. Why is The Lorax called a cautionary tale?

Unpacking the central idea

Today for "sharing the planet we unpacked the central idea" through the key concepts. The below brainstorm shows my current conceptual understanding of the central idea.
